Abstract

The aim of this study is to design a learning environment that enables 8th grade students to determine the positions of irrational numbers, which they encounter for the first time in the topic of square roots, on the number line and to concretize these numbers as lengths using the circle method. For this purpose, the study was designed as a teaching experiment. The research was conducted during the 2017–2018 academic year with ten 8th grade students at a middle school in a rural village in Giresun, Turkiye. Within the scope of the square roots topic in mathematics, the circle method was developed to help students locate irrational numbers on the number line. Data for the study was obtained from a 'Location Test' and semi-structured interviews conducted with the students. The students' levels of identifying the positions of irrational numbers using the circle method were assessed according to the levels of the SOLO taxonomy. It was found that, 4 students showed a relational structure, 2 students showed extended abstract structure, and 4 students showed unistructural structure. The findings indicate that most students were able to use the circle method to determine the positions of irrational numbers on the number line, also they were able to conceptualize irrational numbers as lengths, actively participated in the instructional process, and provided correct responses during interviews even for items they had answered incorrectly on the test. However, difficulties were observed in determining the positions of results from addition and subtraction operations involving irrational numbers, and it was identified that prior knowledge influenced the process of constructing new knowledge. Additionally, all students were able to express that irrational numbers have a place on the number line and that their positions can be determined using the circle method. Based on the findings, it is recommended that students' readiness levels must be considered, specific activities must be developed for negative irrational numbers and operations involving them, and that structured instructional environments must be designed to support students' active participation in the learning process.
