Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to compare the academic self-efficacy levels and problem solving skills of university students studying in the field of health according to whether they took practical course and internship. Material and Methods: Two hundred and thirty university students (mean age; 21.34±1.67 years) studying in the field of health were included in the study. The students were grouped as those who took face-to-face practical course for at least one semester and those who did not, those who did internship in a health institution for at least 3 weeks and those who did not. Students’ academic self-efficacy levels were determined by the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale; problem solving skills were determined by the problem solving inventory. Results: There was no significant difference between the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale and problem solving inventory total and sub-dimension scores of nursing and midwifery students who took practical course and internship and those who did not (p˃0.05). However, a significant difference was found between the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale cognitive practises sub-dimension scores, the problem solving inventory total scores, and the self-confident, planned and hasty approach sub-dimension scores of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation department students who took and did not took internships (p=0.049, p=0.005, p=0.009, p=0.031, p=0.005, respectively). Conclusion: As a result of this research, it was concluded that the academic self-efficacy levels and problem solving skills of the nursing and midwifery students who took practical course and internship and those who did not were similar. However, it was observed that the students of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation department who took internship had better cognitive practice skills and showed a more planned, self-confident and unhurried approach in the problem solving process.
