Abstract
ESG, which encompasses environmental, social, and corporate governance aspects, is closely monitored by contemporary businesses. Non-financial information categorized as ESG has become a voluntary requirement. However, assessing the impact of ESG factors on financial performance is still an emerging field, and the literature has yielded mixed results. This study focuses on the tourism industry by providing industry-specific insights. The three main reasons for focusing on tourism businesses are the size of the sector and many stakeholders, direct and indirect economic impact, and the undeniable environmental impact of companies operating in this sector. The research methodology covers a period from 2005 to 2021, taking into account hotel and leisure establishments in China, France, Italy, Turkey, Mexico, and the United States of America using panel regression analysis. The study formulates hypotheses regarding the impact of ESG scores on the financial performance of tourism businesses, specifically, return on assets, equity, and invested capital. The panel regression models support the hypothesis that ESG scores affect these financial performance indicators. The findings show that ESG scores positively impact return on assets and return on invested capital for tourism businesses. However, the results for return on equity vary by country.
