Abstract
The generation of 1914 is a genuine milestone in Turkish painting which started to develop in the second half of the 19th century. Ibrahim Calli, who went to Paris to study painting as a member of a generation of artists but had to return home with the outbreak of the First World War and a figure active enough for this group to be named after himself, has a particular importance with his identity both as an artist and as a teacher. Ibrahim Calli, who received an academic education, advances his studies with his own individual efforts. The artist, who usually prefers to paint outdoors, produces paintings with an impressionist influence. He is open to innovation and he is brave enough not to hesitate in experiencing different styles and subjects in his paintings. Hence, he goes through a great diversion in his painting style with his Whirling Dervish paintings dated to be later than 1920. This was undoubtedly inspired by his meeting and close friendship with the Ukrainian artist Gritchenko as well. The plastic characteristic of the figures is the evident in these paintings where he adopted a schematic layout close to graphics. Why would he tend towards such a change when he was painting landscapes, portraits, still life and nudes along with his contemporaries? This study titled ‘Modernity Nourished by Tradition: Ibrahim Calli and The Whirling Dervish Series’ focuses on the causes and consequences of the transformation in the original style of the artist. As a result of the study, it was found that the artist closely observed the Whirling Dervishes and all dervishes, and it was seen that the subject moved from the theme of the Orientalists to the subjects of Turkish painting with a correct approach.
