Abstract
Reading is a fundamental prerequisite for academic success and also plays a crucial role in individuals' socialization. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the Achievement Ladder Reading Program (BAMOP) on the fluent reading skills of middle school students with mild intellectual disabilities (MID). In the study, the number of words read correctly per minute and the percentage of reading accuracy of middle school students diagnosed with MID were examined. A multiple probe design across participants, one of the single-subject research methods, was employed. Within the scope of the research, BAMOP—integrating multiple fluent reading strategies—was designed and implemented. The study sample consisted of three middle school students with MID attending a public middle school in the central district of Gümüşhane during the 2024–2025 academic year. In order to assess the clarity of the program for students and to anticipate potential risks during field implementation, a pilot application was completed with two middle school students diagnosed with MID. Among the three primary types of data collected throughout the study (effectiveness, reliability, and social validity), the social validity dimension was shaped based on student feedback. Visual analysis was used for data evaluation. The findings revealed increases in both the number of words read correctly per minute and reading accuracy percentages for all students. Follow-up sessions conducted one, three, and five weeks after the completion of the intervention indicated that while participants were able to maintain their posttest performance levels in some sessions, they were unable to sustain this level in others. Nevertheless, students demonstrated higher performance during follow-up sessions compared to baseline levels. It is considered that conducting systematic and planned instruction three days a week and implementing fluent reading strategies in combination contributed to the success of BAMOP. The findings are believed to provide guidance for teachers and families in reading instruction for students with intellectual disabilities.
