Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of teaching activities supported by Web 2.0 tools on map literacy skills in the 6th grade social studies course. The research design used in the research is a sequential explanatory, mixed research design. The sample group of the research consists of 53 students in the 6th grade attending a middle school in Ortahisar district of Trabzon province. The research includes an experimental group (n=26) and a control group (n=27). In the experimental group, instructional activities supported by Web 2.0 tools were implemented for teaching topics related to map literacy skills in the People, Places, and Environments learning domain, while in the control group, the instruction process was conducted based on the existing curriculum. The quantitative data of the research was collected using the 'Map Literacy Scale (MLS)' developed by Sönmez (2010) and adapted by Ayüldeş (2020). In the qualitative dimension of the research, data reflecting students' thoughts and feelings were obtained from works such as 'Semi-Structured Interview Form,' 'Student Journals,' and 'Student Products.' The MLS was administered as a pre-test and post-test to the experimental and control groups. The pre-test and post-test scores for the experimental and control groups were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 software package. The students' opinions in the experimental group regarding instructional activities supported by Web 2.0 tools were obtained through semi-structured interview forms and student journals. The information obtained from the interview forms was interpreted using the content analysis method. As a result of the research, it was determined that there is no significant difference in the Map Literacy Scale Final Test scores between the experimental and control groups. However, the final test average scores of the experimental and control group students showed a significant difference compared to the pre-test averages. According to the findings from the qualitative data of the study, it was found that students have a positive attitude towards instructional activities supported by Web 2.0 tools and they find the use of Web 2.0 tools in social studies lessons instructive and entertaining.
