Abstract
This study investigates the metaphorical perceptions of visual arts teachers regarding contemporary art practices. The considerable divergence of today's art practices from traditionally learned art forms has led to a cognitive schema conflict on the subject. By exploring the metaphorical perceptions of visual arts teachers toward contemporary art, this research aims to fill a significant gap in the field. The complex and ever-evolving nature of contemporary art poses challenges for visual arts teachers, making it difficult for them to foster critical thinking and creative expression skills in their students. The study highlights the necessity for visual arts teachers to possess both theoretical knowledge and practical experience related to contemporary art.A qualitative case study method was employed in this research. The study group consisted of visual arts teachers working at three secondary schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in Rize Province during the 2024–2025 academic year (selected through a random sampling method). Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher, based on a literature review and expert opinions. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Findings indicate that the overall knowledge level of visual arts teachers regarding contemporary art practices is insufficient. Most participants had never seen or recognized the contemporary art practices and artists presented in the interview form. Nevertheless, some participants attempted to interpret the formal and conceptual aspects of the works, particularly by constructing metaphorical meanings. This suggests that, despite limitations, there is a certain degree of awareness among participants regarding the multilayered nature of contemporary art. The research reveals the need to enhance visual arts teacher candidates' skills in conceptual analysis and critical thinking. For this purpose, undergraduate programs and in-service training should be more holistically integrated with contemporary art.
