Abstract
Imam Hatip schools (IHO) have undertaken an important mission in the field of formal religious education since their establishment. Principals working in these schools are not only limited to administrative responsibilities; they also undertake a leadership function that supports the religious, moral and spiritual development of students. In recent years, transformations in religious education policies and educational management approaches have further diversified the roles of school principals. Despite this, there is a limited number of studies in the religious education literature that address the functions, practices, goals, expectations, and challenges faced by the principals in the religious education process. The aim of this study is to examine in depth the leadership roles of İHO principals in religious education processes and their effects on this process. Case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study group of the research consists of IHO principals working in Ortahisar, Akçaabat and Yomra districts of Trabzon province in the 2023-2024 academic year. The data were obtained through a semi-structured interview form. The interviews were conducted face-to-face in the fall semester of 2023-2024. The data obtained were analyzed by content analysis method. In the study, it was revealed that İHO principals see religious education as not only an administrative but also a spiritual leadership task. Principals shape the school culture through professional and social activities and prioritize the moral development of students. Parents, teachers and students expect principals to be open to communication and sensitive to religious values. However, principals face problems such as bureaucratic obstacles and lack of resources and demand more support from stakeholders. These findings show that IHO principals are not only managerial but also spiritual leaders in the religious education process, shaping the values climate of the school and determining the interaction between stakeholders. Accordingly, in order to carry out the religious education process more effectively and qualitatively, IHO principals should be empowered through in-service trainings and institutional arrangements to support their pedagogical and spiritual leadership roles.
