Abstract
The primary objective of this study is to investigate the impact of attention and focus levels in young athletes interested in darts on their shooting performance. It is known that sports performance is not only limited to physical competence, but also the mental processes of the individual make important contributions. In particular, cognitive skills such as attention and focus are among the factors that directly affect success in sports that require precision and accuracy. In this context, the fact that darts is an inherently attention-demanding sport makes this study important. In this study, a correlational research design, a quantitative research method, was employed, and participants were selected using a purposive sampling approach. The research group consisted of 30 secondary school amateur darts athletes, comprising 15 males and 15 females, between the ages of 14 and 18. This age range was preferred because it is a critical period in which individuals develop rapidly both physically and cognitively. Measuring the attention and focus levels of the participants and comparing the obtained data with the throwing scores provides meaningful insights into evaluating the mental factors that affect sports performance. During the data collection process, attention and focus levels were objectively measured using the Brainwaves Starter Kit and the MindWave Mobile EEG device. The measurements were conducted in a controlled environment at the Beşirli Multi-Purpose Sports Hall in Trabzon. Statistical methods analysed the relationship between participants' dart-throwing performance and cognitive measures. Descriptive statistics, normality tests, Mahalanobis distance analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed. The findings revealed that attention and focus levels have a relationship, although not significant, with the throwing scores of dart athletes. The results obtained from this study suggest that not only physical skills but also mental processes play a role in the performance of young athletes. Therefore, this study may contribute to future research and the development of training programs by drawing attention to the potential effect of mental competencies in individual sports such as darts.
