Abstract
The corona virus epidemic, which emerged in China in 2019, negatively affected the whole world. Changing conditions and extraordinary conditions have affected all fields as well as the education system. Distance education, which was generally applied in higher education institutions before the epidemic, started to be implemented in all educational institutions with the pandemic. New applications made in such an environment where teachers and students are completely unfamiliar arouse curiosity. Especially since primary school students are in the concrete operational stage, it is more meaningful for them to learn by doing, experiencing and seeing. Since the mathematics course usually includes abstract subjects, it needs to be more concrete in order to facilitate its teaching. Therefore, concrete materials should be used as much as possible in teaching mathematics. With the distance education process, teachers and students left the classroom environment and started to perform educational activities at home in front of the screen. In this case, the methods and techniques used by the teacher necessitated changes in the tools. The aim of this study is to determine the self-efficacy of classroom teachers about using concrete materials and their views on preparing and using concrete materials in face-to-face and distance education processes. The research was carried out with a mixed method in which qualitative and quantitative approaches were used together. The study group of the research consists of 16 classroom teachers selected from among 195 classroom teachers and 195 classroom teachers who work in the province of Trabzon in the 2020-2021 academic year and respond to the measurement tools on a voluntarily basis, by using easily accessible case sampling from purposeful sampling methods. As data collection tools, a 5-point Likert-type 'Self-Efficacy Scale for the Use of Concrete Materials in Mathematics Teaching' translated into Turkish by Bakkaloğlu (2007) and semi-structured interview were used. Statistical analysis was used in the analysis of quantitative data, and content analysis was used in the analysis of qualitative data. According to the results of the research, the materials used by classroom teachers for teaching mathematics in distance and face-to-face education differ. While classroom teachers think that virtual materials are more effective in distance education, they think that concrete materials are more effective in face-to-face education. In addition, classroom teachers' self-efficacy for using concrete materials in mathematics teaching was determined at a high level. However, in the interviews, classroom teachers stated that they felt inadequate when using concrete materials in distance education. Teachers reported that the most effective concrete material was the material prepared with the student. For this purpose, material preparation workshops can be created in primary school and applications can be made.
