Abstract
Advertisements that skillfully use visual communication elements in a planned and strategic manner prefer one of the most frequently preferred visual communication elements. Advertising photography is a type of photography used to effectively convey visual messages of products, services and ideas in line with advertising purposes. This study includes a suggestion on the usability of the concepts of “studium” and “punctum” put forward by Roland Barthes in his work “Camera Lucida” in the analysis process of advertisements and advertising photographs. Advertising photographs are used as a tool for marketing communication strategies and beyond. Advertising photographs come to the forefront with their emotional, behavioral and cognitive effects on the target audience. In the study, the concept of studium is discussed in terms of the semiotic reading of advertising photographs and their general meaning and cultural contexts and the messages they present to the target audience, while the concept of punctum is discussed in the context of representing elements that create a unique attraction through individual and emotional effects. The study discusses the aspects in which this analysis technique of Barthes can be applied to advertising. The research suggests that this simultaneous and bidirectional analytical research framework can provide new perspectives to advertising research. With this study, it is possible to state that the concepts of studium and punctum enable semiotic, cultural, contextual, perceptual and emotional analyses in the photographic meaning-making process of advertising photography and provide a strong framework in terms of enabling both source analysis and audience reception research.
