Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of virtual reality-based English teaching platforms on university students' English speaking performance, English speaking anxiety, and their motivation and attitudes towards learning English. The study employs a single-group experimental design involving 31 volunteer tertiary level students. In addition, the impact of virtual reality platforms on speaking skills are explored through an exploratory case study based on student experiences. The scenarios used to enhance speaking skills were tailored to align with the CEFR A1-A2 proficiency levels. The assessment of speaking performance was conducted through Speaking Performance Evaluation Rubric adapted by the researcher, which encompasses sub-skills such as Interaction, Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Fluency and Coherence. The English Speaking Anxiety Questionnaire was utilized to determine English speaking anxiety, while the Motivation and Attitude Questionnaire was employed to assess motivation and attitude towards learning English. In addition, to observe the anxiety experienced by students in real-life settings, the Real-World Speaking Anxiety Analysis Form (ReSAnA), developed by the researcher, was implemented in real-life environments. Following the applications, the sense of presence experienced in the virtual reality platforms was evaluated using the Presence Scale. Semi-structured interviews with the students elucidated the findings related to speaking performance, speaking anxiety, motivation and attitude within the context of virtual reality experiences. The results indicate that the characteristics of virtual reality platforms such as reality, context, and interaction, serve as effective tools in reducing students' speaking anxiety, enhancing their motivation and attitudes towards learning English, and improving their speaking performance. Furthermore, the sense of presence experienced in virtual reality environments plays a significant role in alleviating speaking anxiety. The study is expected to make significant contributions to the planning of English teaching processes that incorporate virtual reality experiences, taking into account learner characteristics, skills, and platform features to achieve effective learning outcomes.
