Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between imagery levels and rational and intuitive decision-making skills in elite basketball players. It is now widely acknowledged that athletic performance cannot be explained solely by physical capabilities, and that mental and psychological factors are at least as determinant as physical attributes. In this context, it is important to reveal the relationship between imagery, which is a significant mental training method for enhancing athletic performance, and decision-making processes. Imagery is defined as the process by which an individual learns or improves a movement by mentally visualizing it before physical execution, and it is an effective technique widely used in sport psychology. Through imagery, improvements can be achieved in athletes' concentration, self-confidence, motivation, and emotional control. On the other hand, decision-making is the process of choosing among alternatives, and the ability to make fast and accurate decisions in a sports setting is one of the key determinants of performance. In this process, rational (analytical) and intuitive (fast and experience-based) decision-making styles come to the forefront. The study was designed using a quantitative research approach. Since the aim was to describe and interpret the relationships among the variables in an in-depth and systematic manner, a correlational survey model was employed. The research group consisted of a total of 160 active, regularly training athletes: 36 players from the Turkish Basketball League (TBL), 71 from the Turkish Basketball Second League (TB2L), and 53 from the Men's Regional Basketball League (EBBL). The sample was formed using convenience sampling. Data collection tools included the Sport Imagery Inventory, adapted into Turkish by Kızıldağ and Tiryaki (2012), and the Rational and Intuitive Decision-Making Scale, adapted into Turkish by İme, Soyer, and Keskinoğlu (2020). Additionally, demographic variables such as age, educational status, league played, years of sports experience, and playing position were utilized. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses. The findings of the study revealed a positive and significant relationship between sport imagery and both rational and intuitive decision-making, indicating that imagery is an important cognitive tool supporting decision-making processes. Furthermore, these results suggest that imagery practices should be systematically integrated into training processes. In this regard, it is recommended that coaches implement regular and structured imagery exercises for athletes.
