Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the conceptual understandings and opinions of 5th grade students regarding destructive natural events through museum education. The sample of the research consists of 28 5th grade students studying at a public school in Trabzon. The data collection tools used in the study include the 'Destructive Natural Events Conceptual Understanding Test (DNECUT),' the 'Interactive Flood and Overflow Museum Mind Map (IFOMMM),' and the 'Interactive Flood and Overflow Museum Evaluation Questionnaire (IFOMEQ).' A case study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was utilized in the research. The DNECUT and IFOMMM were administered before the museum visit, while the DNECUT, IFOMMM, and IFOMEQ were applied after the museum visit. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were used in the analysis of the data obtained from the study. As a result of the administered DNECUT, it was found that students had misconceptions in their pre-test by using the terms 'landslide,' 'flood,' 'overflow,' and 'deluge' interchangeably, while in the post-test, most students had corrected these misconceptions. When examining the findings of the IFOMMM, it was observed that there was more coloring and branching in the post-test compared to the pre-test, indicating that the main outlines of the topic were expressed more clearly. The results of the IFOMEQ revealed that students had positive thoughts about museum education, were attracted to the models, were influenced by real-life examples provided, and expressed that they became aware of ways to protect themselves from destructive natural events through the informative videos shown in the cinema hall. It was noted that students requested more applications and content knowledge regarding certain concepts of destructive natural events within the museum. In this context, it has been suggested that museum education should also be conducted in different science topics and concepts, and the necessary conditions should be provided.
