Abstract
This study examines the social, pedagogical, and cultural dynamics that sustained the madrasa tradition in Trabzon during the Republican period. Using a qualitative case study design, data were obtained through document analysis of the narratives of forty scholars in Karadeniz'de Hoca Olmak and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that orienta- tion toward madrasa education was shaped by four key factors: economic constraints, the desire to become a religious official, the intention to preserve religious identity, and the responsibility of intergenerational knowledge transmission. Particularly in rural areas, madrasas functioned both as a pathway to a profession and as a structure preserving reli- gious identity. Despite the collapse of formal institutions, educational activities continued in mosques, scholars' homes, rural settings, and even shops, where the teacher's scholarly authority, rather than the physical space, was determinative. The scholars who sustained this tradition possessed ijazah, were well-versed in the classical curriculum, served with a selfless ethos, and assumed responsibility for the material and spiritual needs of their students. Scholars specializing in Qur'anic recitation (qurrāʾ) transformed the region into a nationally recognized center of specialization. Although students' education proceeded under material hardship and external pressure, scholarly depth was maintained through strong teacher–student relationships, the journeyman system, and one-to-one instruction. The process culminated in the granting of ijazah, representing both participation in the scholarly chain of transmission and professional legitimacy. These scholars functioned not only as educators but also as social guides, moral authorities, and protective figures during times of crisis. Madrasa education thus produced professional outcomes — imams, muftis, preachers, and Qur'an course instructors — while sustaining regional religious memory, strengthening social solidarity, and reproducing religious authority. The study thereby contributes an original, analytically grounded perspective to the literature on the history of religious education.
