Abstract

Reaction time and agility skills are considered to be two very important skills for athletes to take action before their rivals and gain advantage. In the literature, there are many exercises applied for the development of these two skills. In the literature, there are many exercises applied for the development of these two skills. However, there is no research examining the effects of these skills after an educational game involving reaction and a perceptual game without exerting effort in the classroom environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of in-class educational games on reaction and agility skills, which were applied for 30 minutes 2 days a week for 8 weeks. Twenty-six young female wrestling athletes (Training Group= age: 20,08±2,19 year, height: 1,60±5,33 cm, body weight: 59,50±10,38 kg, bmi: 22,94±3,19, Control Group= age: 17,83±0,93 year, height: 1,63±5,25 cm, body weight: 60,91±10,44 kg, bmi: 22,58±2,79) who regularly train participated in the study. Visual hand reaction, Y-Reactive agility and Speedcourt® agility tests were applied to the athletes respectively. Then, the athletes were divided into 2 groups as 13 experimental and 13 control groups. The experimental group played fun games that require reaction and perception skills for 30 minutes twice a week for 8 weeks. After these games, the experimental group participated in routine wrestling training with the control group. After 8 weeks, the tests applied in the first tests were applied as the post-test. The data obtained were found to be normally distributed after statistical analyses. Paired sample t test was used for intra-group comparisons in the pre and post tests of the athletes and independent sample t test was used in the analyses to determine the difference between the two groups. After statistical analyses, it was found that there was a significant difference between the Y-Reactive skill practice times of the subject group between the first and last test (*p<.05). In the post-test comparisons of the two groups, there was a significant difference between the Speedcourt® agility test results of the subject and control groups (*p<.05). However, there was no difference in the hand reaction test results of the athletes, and there was no difference in the Y agility skill in intergroup comparisons (*p>.05). According to the statistical results of the study, it can be said that 8-week educational games, which are based on reaction and perception and implemented in the classroom, have positive effects on agility skills. Teachers and coaches can help their athletes to improve their agility skills by playing educational games in the classroom.
