Abstract

This article offers a critical examination of the life, intellectual legacy, and independent treatise on revelation (Risāla fī Kayfiyyat al-Waḥy) authored by Aḥmad b. Ḥasan al-Kefevī, an understudied Ottoman scholar absent from the classical biographical lexicons. Internal evidence from his writings suggests that he originated from Kefe (modern-day Feodosia in Crimea) and engaged in scholarly activity over an extended period. His correspondence and interactions with prominent statesmen of the period offer valuable insights into the intellectual milieu to which he belonged. The fact that the majority of his works are composed in Turkish provides important indications re- garding both his scholarly orientation and his intended readership. The study undertakes a systematic analysis of his aforementioned treatise, exploring its thematic architecture and argumentative structure. Key topics addressed include the process by which the Archangel Gabriel receives and transmits revelation, the hierarchical stages of the Qurʾān’s descent (tanazzulāt), the functions of angels in the revelatory process, and the linguistic dimensions of revelation. This analysis is situated within a comparative framework, engaging classical sources in Qurʾānic exegesis, ḥadīth, and kalām. Furthermore, the article situates the treatise within the broader intellectual trajectory of its author by offering contextual information concerning his life and scholarly production, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of his epistemological and theological approach. This study seeks to reconstruct the intellectual profile of a neglected Ottoman scholar while contributing to the understanding of how Islamic theological discourse on revelation evolved and adapted throughout the post-classical period via systematic textual analysis.
