Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to examine the contribution of individual loans provided by the banking sector to economic growth at the provincial level in Türkiye over the period 2009-2023. Design/Methodology: The study covers all 81 provinces of Türkiye and employs principal component analysis and panel data analysis. Data on housing loans, vehicle loans, overdraft facilities, other consumer loans, and credit card receivables were subjected to principal component analysis to develop an individual banking credit index. Two different panel data models were developed, with total gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita GDP at the provincial level serving as dependent variables and the individual banking credit index as the independent variable. In addition, per capita cash loans were included as a control variable in the models. Findings: The estimation results of the first model indicate that the individual banking credit index has a positive and statistically significant effect on gross domestic product at the 5% significance level. Similarly, the second model shows that the individual banking credit index has a positive and statistically significant effect on per capita gross domestic product at the 10% significance level. Furthermore, the explanatory power of the models was 86.7% and 93.9%, respectively. Overall, the findings indicate that individual loans contribute positively to economic growth at the provincial level. This finding highlights the role of individual loans in regional development and underscores the importance of increasing the diversity of individual credit services, facilitating access to credit, and expanding incentives. Limitations: The study is limited to the period 2009-2023 and covers all 81 provinces of Türkiye. Originality/Value: The study considers all types of individual loans, including housing loans, vehicle loans, overdraft facilities, other consumer loans, and credit card receivables, and incorporates them into the analysis through the construction of an individual banking credit index. Accordingly, the study is expected to contribute to the literature by aggregating all individual loan types provided at the provincial level into an index and examining their relationship with economic growth across provinces during the period under consideration. These aspects constitute the distinctive contribution and originality of the study.
