Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of unplugged coding activities designed based on the YAP (Seven Steps in Programming) model on the cognitive and affective characteristics of 5th grade students in mathematics lessons. In this regard, the effects of activities carried out through mathematics problems structured according to the YAP model on students' academic achievement, attitudes towards mathematics, mathematics motivation, attitudes towards mathematical problem solving, and computational thinking skills were investigated; additionally, students' views on the process were also explored. The study was conducted using a concurrent embedded mixed methods research design with quantitative priority, in which qualitative data were embedded within the quantitative design—without constituting a separate phase—in order to support the quantitative findings and contribute to their in-depth interpretation. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently. In the quantitative phase, a single-group pretest–posttest experimental design without a control group was employed. The study group consisted of 31 fifth-grade students enrolled in an examination-based middle school in Erzurum, selected through convenience sampling. Prior to the main implementation, a seven-week pilot study was conducted with 22 seventh-grade students, and the data collection tools and activities were revised accordingly. The main implementation lasted eight weeks and was carried out through unplugged coding activities integrated into mathematics lessons. Quantitative data were collected via an achievement test developed by the researcher, the Mathematics Attitude Scale , the Mathematics Motivation Scale , the Mathematical Problem Solving Attitude Scale and the Computational Thinking Scale. In the qualitative phase, teacher diaries kept by the researcher throughout the implementation and semi-structured interviews conducted with six students at the end of the process were used as data sources. For normally distributed variables, the paired samples t-test was applied; for non-normally distributed variables, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. Qualitative data were analyzed through descriptive analysis. The findings revealed that unplugged coding activities designed according to the YAP model produced significant and positive effects on all variables examined. A statistically significant increase was observed in students' motivation toward mathematics (t(30)=−2.19, p=.036, Cohen's d=0.39), attitudes toward mathematics (Z=−2.54, p=.011), and attitudes toward mathematical problem solving (Z=−3.43, p=.001). A significant improvement was also found in computational thinking skills (t(30)=−2.10, p=.045, Cohen's d=0.38), while the effect on academic achievement was large in magnitude (t(30)=−4.97, p<.001, Cohen's d=0.89). Consistent with the quantitative results, qualitative findings indicated that as the process progressed, students increasingly tended to express their solution steps in writing and to analyze problems by breaking them into smaller parts, and their willingness to participate in the activities grew. In conclusion, unplugged coding activities based on the YAP model can be considered an effective approach for structuring problem-solving processes in mathematics education and contributing to students' cognitive and affective development.
