Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between university students' attitudes towards gender roles and cognitive flexibility and authenticity. Besides, it was aimed to examine gender roles attitude in terms of some demographic variables. The study was designed in accordance with correlational design and causal comparison methods among quantitative research approaches. The sample group of the research consists of 452 students studying at various faculties of Trabzon University (Faculty of Education, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Sport Sciences, Faculty of Theology, and Faculty of Law) in the 2019-2020 academic year. Personal Information Form, Gender Roles Attitude Scale, Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, and Authenticity Scale were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data; Pearson Correlation analysis, Multiple Linear Regression analysis, Single Sample t-test, Independent t-test, One Way Anova analysis, Kruskal Wallis H test, and Mann Whitney U test techniques were used. Data analysis was performed on IBM SPSS 22.0. As a result of the research, it was found that the gender roles attitude was positively correlated with cognitive flexibility and authenticity. According to the regression analysis, cognitive flexibility is a significant predictor of gender roles attitude, but authenticity does not have a significant role in predicting gender roles attitude. When the attitudes of university students regarding gender roles are examined, it is seen that they have an egalitarian attitude. Significant differences were found as a result of examining the attitudes of gender roles according to demographic variables. The gender roles attitude of university students varies significantly in favor of women by gender. When analyzed in terms of the region where the vast majority of life passes; those who spend their lives in the metropolitan have a more egalitarian attitude than those who spend in the village. Analysis results according to the department of education; It has shown that the students studying in education, communication and law faculties adopt a more egalitarian attitude towards gender roles than those studying at the theology faculty. Similarly, the high level of socioeconomic income makes a difference in favor of the egalitarian attitude towards gender roles. According to another finding, the attitude of gender roles also differs in terms of the number of siblings. As the number of siblings increases, the gender roles attitude tends in the traditional direction. Another demographic variable is parental attitudes. The mother's adoption of a democratic attitude and the father's adoption of inconsistent attitudes have an egalitarian effect. Gender role attitude does not differ significantly between the mother and father's marital status, family type, and birth order. While the vast majority of the findings were in line with the literature, different results were also reached in terms of some variables. The resulting results are discussed based on the literature and suggestions for further research are presented.
