Abstract

With the transition to a multi-party system in Turkey in 1946, the rigid secularism policies of the single-party era softened, leading to partial improvements in areas such as freedom of religion and conscience, religious education, and the increased influence of the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet). The transition period to multi-party governance was also significant for revitalizing and diversifying the publishing landscape. Accordingly, Islamic journals, which emphasized religious guidance activities, began to feature topics such as the Qur’an, tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), hadith, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), and Islamic history to inform society. One such journal, Ehli Sünnet Dergisi, aimed primarily to educate Muslims, especially the youth, on the principles of Islam. In this context, the article aims to examine the status of the Qur’an and its exegesis in the Ehli Sünnet Dergisi in response to the political transformation and changes experienced during the transition from the single-party era to the multi-party system. The reflections in the writings of Abdurrahim Zapsu (d. 1958), the editor-in-chief and publisher of the journal, are identified through document analysis. Additionally, the nature of the tafsir featured in the journal’s exegesis column, the characteristics of the exegete, the methodology employed, and the contemporary issues addressed in the tafsir are analyzed. Understanding the revival of religious life after May 1950 through the lens of such journals will contribute to an accurate understanding of the developments during the multi-party period. Notably, as observed in many Islamic journals, there is a significant difference between the approaches of Ehli Sünnet Dergisi before and after May 1950. From its inception in 1947 until the years 1949–50, the journal maintained a cautious publishing policy. However, starting from this period, the journal began to address more bold topics, particularly regarding religion and secularism. This historical shift is also reflected in the exegesis column. Until 1949, contemporary issues were scarcely addressed in the journal’s tafsir section. However, this reserved stance changed markedly with the appointment of Şemsettin Günaltay, a prime minister with a medrese background, who played a key role in the transition to a multi-party system and developments in religious education.
