Abstract
This study aims to examine the role of gender in the career choice and professional identity formation of physical education and sports teachers. The study was conducted with 525 students from various departments and levels (2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades) at the Faculty of Sport Sciences, Gümüşhane University. The study sought to explore the relationships between gender roles, the influence of gender on career choice, and pre-service teacher identity perceptions. Data were collected using the Egalitarian and Traditional Gender Roles Scale, the Gender Role in Career Choice Scale, and the Pre-Service Teacher Identity Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Tukey Test and correlation analyses. The findings revealed that gender significantly influenced participants' perceptions of gender roles and attitudes toward career choice. Female students were found to adopt egalitarian gender roles at higher levels, while male students were more inclined toward traditional gender roles. Moreover, gender was found to have an impact on career choice, with female students showing a strong motivation to pursue teaching despite prevailing gender stereotypes. Differences in pre-service teacher identity dimensions were also observed, indicating that female students felt more competent in their identity as future teachers, whereas male students demonstrated different levels of confidence regarding the profession. These findings provide valuable insights into the influence of gender in career choice and professional identity development within the field of physical education and sports teaching. The study underscores the need for gender-sensitive education policies and support programs to foster a more inclusive approach in the development of teacher identities in this field.
