Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate how prospective mathematics teachers’ ability to translate between symbolic and verbal forms of mathematical propositions develops with respect to grade level. In the study this ability is characterized by four subabilities: recognizing and forming the symbolic form of a proposition given in verbal form, and recognizing and forming the verbal form of a proposition given in symbolic form. In the study, a test consisting of 16 questions was used as data collection tool. The participants consisted of 145 students studying in different grades of the Elementary Mathematics Teacher Education program of a state university. The findings showed that students’ performances differ with respect to the sub-ability focused. In addition, the findings indicated that the adjectives used to translate the quantifiers have an effect on understanding the meaning of the proposition. In line with the results, it is proposed to carry out studies to examine the effect of different adjectives used to express the quantifiers in propositions in understanding the meaning of them.
